  • There are a lot of important details associated with a move. Here's a handy checklist you can print out and put on the refrigerator or bulletin board as a reminder of what you need to do at every stage of the moving process.

    Eight weeks before moving day

Contract with a mover or arrange for friends to help on moving day. Sort through all that stuff in your attic, basement, shed, garage, etc., and throw away what you don’t need. (This is an easy one to put off. Don’t procrastinate, you’ll thank yourself later.)

If you’re moving to a new city, contact the chamber of commerce or visitor's bureau for information.

Shop your moving supplies agaisnt movers prices (can get them shipped free)

Planning a move and just found out your ex took your boxes and its days till your Move?

Don't worry, use our moving calculator and get supplies in 24 hours (shipping is Free!).

    Six weeks before moving day

If you're being relocated by your employer, check your relocation policy to verify what expenses they will pay for and what you are responsible for.

Contact the IRS and/or your accountant for information on tax-deductible moving expenses.

Contact schools, doctors, dentists, lawyers and accountants and get copies of your records. Ask for referrals in your new town.

Make a list of everyone you need to notify about your move: family, friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.Subscribe to the local paper in your new city.

Locate all auto licensing and registration documents. If you plan to put some items in storage, make the necessary arrangements.

    Four weeks before moving day

Obtain a change-of-address kit from the post office. Fill it out and return it early; it won’t go into effect until the date you specify.

Contact utility companies (gas, electric, water, telephone, cable TV, and trash collection) to arrange to disconnect service at your old address and connect it at your new one. Make sure phone and utilities are connected and working at both your current and new homes on moving day

If your move requires a change in your auto, homeowner's, medical, or life insurance needs, call to make any changes.

If you're packing yourself, purchase packing boxes. Pack any items that you won't be needing in the next month. Plan a garage sale to sell unneeded items or arrange to donate to charity.

    Three weeks before moving day

If you’re moving out of state, make travel arrangements and reservations for your trip. But don't make plane reservations for the same day that you close. House closings are often delayed, and other unexpected situations often arise that may delay your departure unexpectedly. Store important papers (insurance, will, deeds, stock, etc.) in a safe place. Arrange to close accounts at your local bank and open accounts in your new city.

    Two weeks before moving day

If you’re moving out of state and traveling by car, have your vehicle checked and serviced for the trip. If you're moving into or out of a building with elevators, contact building management to schedule use of the elevators.

    One week before moving day

Settle any outstanding bills with local merchants.

Withdraw the contents of your safety deposit box, pick up dry cleaning, return library books and rented videotapes, etc.

Take pets to the veterinarian for any needed immunizations. Get copies of their veterinary records.

Drain gas and oil from power equipment (lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.)

Give away any plants you don’t plan to move

Prepare directions to your new home for your moving company or friends that are helping you move. Include your new phone number, if it's working.

Two or three days before moving day

Defrost your freezer and refrigerator. Put a half a cup of fresh ground coffee or baking soda in a nylon stocking and place inside to keep it smelling fresh. Make sure to block the doors so they can't accidentally close on pets or children.

Disconnect and clean any other major appliances that will be moving with you.

Unplug all television sets so they will be at room temperature on moving day to avoid internal damage.

Pack a box of personal items that will be needed immediately at your new home. Have this box loaded last, carry it with you in your car or check it if you’re traveling by plane.

If you’re using a moving company, set aside anything else that you're taking with you so that it doesn’t get loaded on the moving van by mistake.

Contact your moving company or friends to confirm their arrival time on moving day.

    Moving day

Record all utility meter readings (gas, electric, water) to compare to final bills.

If you’re using a moving company, make sure someone is at home to answer the van foreman's questions. Read your bill of lading and inventory carefully before you sign them. Keep these -- and all related papers -- in a safe location until all charges have been paid and all claims, if any, have been settled.

    45Days After the Move

Go through the checklist of deposits you were supposed to get back and make sure you did. Double check phone, gas, electric, cable, newspaper accounts to make sure they are closed and still have security codes(passwords)on the accounts to prevent new tenants at your old place from re-opening them up. Make sure all mail is not going to your old address on credit card, car loan, personal loan accounts and anything else that has your personal credit information.

    90 days After the Move

Check your credit and your old utility accounts one more time. Look for strange inquiries using your old address as reference and if there is then report it immediately to the creditor that ran the report and the credit bureas. Place a credit statement on each credit report (your right by law)stating the following: "I have reason to believe someone is using my identity, therefore no extention of credit is valid unless you get my written AND verbal authorization. You must call me immediately at (put a phone number, like a cell phone number that you always have on you here)(xxx-xxx-xxxx) while you are processing the application. If you do not reach me directly then you are not authorized and by law I will not be liable for that extention of credit."

This statement has made it possible to significantly avoid Identity Theft and sometimes has made it to where the apprehension of the theives was during their waiting for the loan approval in the place of business that called you.

To get fully protected we recommend using companies that offer Identity Theft systems and Locking your Credit from being used till you need it. [more]
