Since 1990 we have seen thousands of clients and noticed that 2 people with the same income, cultural background, and occupations would have a totally different lifestyle.
In the beginning we would scratch our heads because two 25 yr olds making $3000 a month would have 2 totally different lifestyles. One had savings and retirement accounts set up, the other was living pay check to pay check; homeowner versus being late on their rent.
Time and time again the difference was "how" they spent their money and how they were able to keep as much as they could. Cultural factors helped them too. In some cultures debt is disgraceful and if you don't have $10,000 under your mattress then you were ostracized. Family values inbred a level of financial savvy that even the clients couldn't explain to us, "it was the way we were raised," they said. Then there was the negative reinforcement of family lifestyle. "My dad never had a dime and I told myself I wouldn't grow up like that."
Others learned from mentors who passed on their success, some did allot of research by reading articles or listening to financial TV or radio.
As we saw more and more customer profiles we saw patterns of behavior and we started doing "tune ups", taking their credit reports, application, and finances and would refer them to people that would lower their rates, increase cashflow and basically give them a financial makeover.
